Lost in translation

Scandinavian languages must be the antitheses of Hindi. No kidding. Can you imagine a Hindi movie with a female lead named Ilsa Lund? Would you join Lund University? Or employ the services of Ingersoll Rand? I think not!

Saw Ocean’s thirteen last night. Excellent movie. The producers played it safe after the much maligned second part. So the plot is pretty simple and straight-forward. Not as many laughs as Ocean’s Twelve. But still well worth the time and money.

Ocean’s twelve had laughs?!
Maybe the humor was lost on me apart from the occasional laugh, but I am pretty sure it was horrible to say the least.

The way I see it, Eleven had the best plot, Twelve had the most laughs and Thirteen falls somewhere in between both these. I am planning an “In defense of Ocean’s Twelve” post for the benefit of all the fans afraid of coming out. Of the top of my head, I can mention the Julia Roberts/Tess scenes and the scenes at the beginning where the characters are re-introduced to illustrate the humour in Twelve.
“This… You couldn’t see this in my future?!?” – Reuben
This line cracks me up every time.

Twelve was over the top and too goofy for me. I did enjoy some moments, but it was disappointing.
I just saw thirteen. I would put it between 11 and 12 (closer to 12 than to 11). But I wanted more laughs for my money. There wasn’t any ‘plot’ and there wasn’t any great intelligence going into the heist. Btw, I would recommend Knocked Up. I liked it. It’s funny (the story slightly reminiscent of Nine Months) but I don’t understand America, IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes going sooo gaga over it.
I mean Rotten Tomatoes giving it 92%. (Like G.O.B would say) Come On!

[...] Thirteen was in between the two and as van Kalip would say, the producers tried to play safe. The plot was kept simple, no major twists as such and [...]

The main reason why Thirteen is not as good as Eleven is because we know right from the start how they are planning to pull off the heist. Unlike Eleven where the plan was kept a secret until the execution. But credit to Soderbergh, in that in the third movie, when they actually put their plan into motion, I couldn’t help but smile.
Knocked Up was one of the five movies on my To Watch summer movies list. Unfortunately it didn’t get released in India. I will have to wait till I get back to Roorkee.
The movies that I am now looking forward to are – Evan Almighty, Bourne Ultimatum and Aap ka Surroor.

12 was bad. The tess- roberts stuff was rather lame.
